Carpal Tunnel

What Is Carpal Tunnel Release?

Carpal tunnel release is a simple, effective surgical procedure that relieves the numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness in your hand caused by carpal tunnel syndrome.

This condition occurs when the median nerve, which runs through a narrow passageway in your wrist, becomes compressed by swelling or pressure.

During the procedure, the surgeon cuts the transverse carpal ligament at the base of the palm to create more space in the carpal tunnel and relieve pressure on the nerve. The procedure can be done in two ways:

  • Endoscopic: Minimally invasive, using a small camera and tiny incisions.
  • Open: A small incision in the palm to access and release the ligament directly.

Carpal tunnel release not only relieves symptoms but also helps prevent permanent nerve damage and restores hand function.
